Round Top Area Chamber of Commerce Spotlight: Rohan Meadery

Apr 29, 2020 | Chamber News

With hope on the horizon for businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Wendy Rohan, co-owner of Rohan Meadery, says she’s been blown away by the response and support from their customers. Although things aren’t quite the same as they were before county-wide stay-at-home orders were issued, Rohan Meadery has remained operational during a challenging time for all Round Top businesses by offering their wines, meads and ciders through curbside pick-up and online shopping. “The response was better than we expected,” Wendy says. “It’s really buoyed our spirits.”

While the name Rohan Meadery already suggests what their business specializes in, there’s much more than meets the eye when it comes to John and Wendy Rohan’s tasting room and farm in La Grange. Blissful Folly Farm is home to Rohan wines and meads and Blissful Folly hard ciders and fruit wines, and the property includes several acres of land where the couple grows grapes, blackberries, pears and peaches organically. At 11 years old, their meadery is the oldest in Texas, and it began when John and Wendy decided they wanted a change of scenery and a break from their busy lives in Houston. With their backgrounds in science and Wendy’s passion for growing and gardening, they moved to the Texas countryside and started their business producing mead (a wine made from fermented honey sugar) in a unique Czech/German style that set them apart from other meaderies and put Rohan on the map.

Wendy’s love of being outdoors means that she’s working her dream job on the farm every day – especially because she gets to be surrounded by the beautiful nature and scenery in this part of the state. And she was drawn to this area because of the creativity and the uniqueness of each business here. “It’s inspirational seeing how much everyone cares,” she says. “It’s such a supportive community of business owners, and we all know we have people to go to when we need advice or feedback.”

Rohan Meadery is more than just their tasting room – it’s an open working farm too! When social distancing guidelines are lifted, you can expect to enjoy live music and wander their farm visiting the animals and beehives while enjoying a glass of one of their organically-produced beverages.
